PPF for Tesla – Why is it so popular?

There is an interesting fact we notice that the first thing people do when they buy a Tesla is install a paint protection film (PPF) for it, especially for Tesla Model 3 and Model Y, PPF wrapping became an essential thing. But what is the reason for this?

In this article, we are going to explain to you the reason behind it and give some advice for Tesla car owners.

Reason 1: Unique geometry of Tesla Motor – especially Model Y

Tesla is built from the ground up as an electric vehicle, that is why Tesla cars have a totally different external and internal structure compared with a fuel engine car.

The front face of Tesla cars is designed as a rigid structure which is a fully enclosed structure without a front grill. This cool design makes the paint of Tesla more vulnerable when driving.

Normally, the front grill and intercooler of cars allow stones and dust to pass through while driving in a high speed, thus reducing the damage of the car. While the entire front of the Tesla especially Tesla Model 3 is a flat plane that pushes the air up and over the car, grabbing rocks and debris, dragging them over the plane, and creating unsightly paint chips.

Reason 2, Tesla Aesthetic

As mentioned above, Tesla’s advanced shape and unique appearance are one of the reasons why many people choose it. But the disadvantage of the design is that one small damage to the paint will destroy the style. Without the front grill and decorations on the car, people will easily notice if there is damage on the external painting, especially for Tesla Model 3, that is why Tesla owners love Paint Protection film.

From our experience, we’ve known Tesla owners who report that the paint chips and pits easily and that micro-scratches especially on dark-colored cars can cause the paint to look greyish or milky. We have seen these issues on Teslas with only a few hundred miles on them. We have also seen that the paint on Teslas chips on obvious areas such as the bumper and the hood, but also in front of the rear wheels. Tesla has addressed this with a cold-weather kit, which is essentially mud flaps. Tesla owners who drive in places with tough winters where they use sand on the road report that the paint on the bottom of their Teslas degrades heartbreakingly fast.

Reason 3, Special R-M paints for Tesla

Tesla Motors use a special R-M brand automotive refinish paint which gives the car a beautiful look, but the paint is also very thin. The unique paints make repairing a Tesla more expensive. What’s more, only the authorized repair factories have the permission to repair paint for Tesla and the work quality is not guaranteed.

Reason 4, Tesla Costs Less to Install PPF (Paint Protection Film) than Other Brands in Shining Car Care

Before I explain why it’s cheaper to do PPF Wrap for Tesla in my shop, you need to understand that the price of a PPF work depends on how big and hard the work is, basically, how much time it will cost.
